Mattel's Battlestar Galactica Action Figure Retrospective

Updated: Apr 2, 2021

In today's toy line retrospective we take a look at Mattel's Battlestar Galactica vintage line of 3.75” figures and vehicles. Based on characters from the popular Star Wars inspired television series, Battlestar Galactica starred Lorne Greene, Richard Hatch, and Dirk Benedict. The show originally aired on ABC for 24 episodes from 1978 to 1979 before being cancelled. It was revived when a write-in campaign to bring the show back was successful and A further 10 episodes of the series were produced in 1980.

The Mattel BSG action figures were made very similar to the insanely popular Star Wars toy line from Kenner. Both lines featured figures that measured 3.75” and had 5 points of articulation. Much like the source material, the BSG figures didn’t quite reach the same level of quality as their Star Wars contemporaries. Most of wave one is fairly easy to find, but accessories such as weapons and capes are generally more elusive - Dagget almost always is missing his tail! Reproductions of vintage BSG accessories can be easier to obtain and inexpensive substitutes for the real thing.
